My heart goes out to the Luong family this week after distraction became deadly when a young mother, Katie Luong, inadvertently left her eleven month old daughter asleep in her SUV to die in sweltering temperatures. Luong began what would seem to be a typical workday this past Wednesday, when she failed to make the stop at the sitter’s, a normal part of her morning routine. The distraction of overwhelming stress and distraction was said to have been the cause of this mother’s tragic mishap that fatal morning.
I couldn’t help but consider how distraction has become a major issue in our society. I am a fan of a very popular blog written by Rachel Stafford called www.handsfreemama.com Rachel’s insight and wisdom got my attention a couple of years ago, when I suddenly became aware of how distractions were taking over my life. Rachel shares her story on how she was extremely distracted with the demands of life and increasing technology, and one day she recognized she was missing out on what was most precious. Rachel has recently published her first book based on her incredible blog. I am sure everyone will be able to relate to her story; be sure to check out her blog.
Ever changing and developing technology continue to promote more distraction as we all feel we have to keep up. But, where do we draw the line? Our brains become inundated with information, and we attempt to obsess in multi-task mania at work and at home.
I for one have to fight this battle daily, as I have had distraction issues since grade school. However, it does not have to be this way. The Answer is to FOCUS 100% on Jesus. It’s more than just giving Him His rightful place at the top of our daily agenda. We have to surrender our entire agenda to Him. JESUS is not just #1 – He is the ENTIRE LIST. When we are not fully surrendered to HIM, then we are at risk. The inventor of distraction, our enemy, wants nothing more than to wreak havoc in our lives. The devil uses distraction and busyness to take our focus off what’s most important.
Dismissing distraction is a daily task. It cannot be shut off just once. It continues to hound us if we allow it to. This is why it’s so important to READ and LEARN the WORD OF GOD, SPEAK IT, and PRAY IT daily. Distraction can be downloaded when we give the enemy a foothold to take over our agenda. The way to derail distraction is to move our attraction closer to the ONE WHO is the LOVER OF OUR SOULS. It’s all about choosing what we do with control. When we relinquish control to our Savior, we are more apt to have laser focus on what’s most important in our daily lives. Distraction cannot be ignored, because it’s available at every turn. However, when we choose for our lives to have order and not be clustered in confusion, we are given the freedom to focus on True Significance and Purpose!
First, I pray for the Luong family. Please strengthen them through this devastating time of pain. Provide Your HOPE so that they won’t give up. Please protect us from dangerous distractions. Even though distraction is unavoidable, guide us by showing us the significance of more time with YOU. Provide us REST and direct our steps for safety, healthy relationships, and good choices. May we never forget that fully surrendering to Your control is the best antidote for distraction. May we seek Your presence consistently and appreciate your gifts and blessings each day. Help us to make full use of our time wisely in communion with you.
In Your Holy Name,
