John 15:4 (The Message)
Live in me. Make your home in me just as I do in you. In the same way that a branch can’t bear grapes by itself but only by being joined to the vine, you can’t bear fruit unless you are joined with me.
I am officially on Twitter now. I am typically a step behind in technology, because quite frankly, new technology intimidates me. I am sure you have heard of Twitter, and possibly have been “on Twitter” for a few years now, but just in case you are unfamiliar, I have provided a definition of Twitter.
According to PC Magazine and Wikipedia, Twitter is social networking and microblogging instant messaging system that allows a person to send brief text messages (known as “tweets”) up to 140 characters in length to a list of followers. Launched in 2006, Twitter was designed as a social network to keep friends and colleagues informed throughout the day. According to the Urban Dictionary, Twitter is basically facebook for people with short attention spans.
Twitter allows you to instantly connect to what’s most important to you. You can follow friends, experts, favorite celebrities, and breaking news.
I think it’s interesting how we are intrigued by what celebrities and experts are doing in “real time.” We all want to be “in the know” it seems. Many times, celebrities and experts have “agents” who handle the tweeting.
How cool is it that we can be instantly connected to the Creator of the Universe, no matter what level we are technology driven. Twitter is supposed to be a simple way to be connected. I think it’s incredible that it is truly simple to connect with the God of the Universe.
Currently, we are in the midst of 21 Days of Prayer at Church of the Highlands. Every six months we have an opportunity to meet in community and focus on prayer for 21 Days of Prayer (January and August). This generation is obsessed with cell phones, facebook, twitter, YouTube, etc. but when it comes to prayer, we get lazy or make excuses because of distractions.
When we DRAW NEAR to God, HE DRAWS NEAR to us. WE just have to call on Him. If we want to truly be “in the know” we just have to keep our eyes on the Father. Prayer is an instant message that He cares to receive! When we “follow” Him, He keeps us informed, and won’t disconnect. It’s our choice to connect, and the only agent He has is JESUS but we get to communicate directly to Him because of JESUS.
Now that is TWEET-WORTHY!
Help us to recognize our need for you. Guide us to understand that the connection we have with the social media can become a god. Give us balance, but most importantly, help us to realize that the best connection is WITH YOU. Thank you for the advances in technology that allow us to progress in sharing the Word of God with the world, but don’t allow us to be obsessed with the conduit of the message more than we are with THE MESSAGE!
