Matthew 11:28
“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”
A week ago Sunday, Pastor Larry Stockstill of Bethany World Prayer Center in Baton Rouge, LA spoke at Church of the Highlands on REST. The subject of REST was fitting as our current Senior Pastor Chris Hodges is taking a sabbatical during this season.
Pastor Stockstill inspired me with his description of REST. I thought it would be a beautiful way to tie in how we are blessed with RESTING in our freedom on this incredible day that we recognize our brave men and women who have sacrificed their lives for this gift of freedom.
Stockstill used the following acrostic to describe true REST. I couldn’t resist sharing it in this post, as it has inspired me and shown me a different dimension of REST.
R – We must learn to RELAX IN WHO WE ARE. We shouldn’t try to do what we can’t or try to be someone we aren’t. We are called to be who we are in HIM, because that’s where grace flows. We should recognize who God has made each of us individually and live out the unique gifts He has designed in us for His beautiful purposes.
E –  It’s important that we consistently EXAMINE OURSELVES FOR SIN. Sin is an irritant that will cause us guilt, shame, and condemnation. There is NO condemnation for those in Christ. We must KNOW and remember that we are 100% forgiven and guard ourselves from anything that might steal our REST. There we can claim His fruit of JOY.
S –  We must SURRENDER TO THE WILL OF GOD. The will of God is the perfect place for us to REST. If we are in the will of God, purpose will protect us. When we go our own way and waver in our purpose, we will lose that REST. When we give up to the will of God, we discover His supernatural fruit of PEACE.
T –   REST IS A MATTER OF TIMING. Timing is critical. We must WAIT for the purposes of God to naturally open like a flower; not to pick at it and push through it before it is ready. When we are RESTING in HIS TIMING, we are using His fruit of PATIENCE.
Thank you for sending your Son, Jesus to be the ultimate sacrifice for our true freedom. May we never forget that when we REST in your Spirit, we are in the perfect place. Please provide us joy, peace, and patience as we learn to REST in You daily.
In Jesus Name
