Verse and Message (Week of May 24-31, 2008) May 30, 2008

This past week, I relished in the joy of heading back to the beach for a much needed “get-away.”  Upon returning back to the “real world” I recalled a verse and message I sent a year ago that I felt was applicable this year as well.  I think it was timely due to the onset of summer.  During the summer, we sometimes let our guard down since it is a season of relaxation.  However, throughout all the seasons in life, we must continue to stay alert to any messages the Lord sends us in order to protect us.  I tweaked the message a little to fit my experience this year…..see below:

1 Corinthians 10:11 (The Message)
These are all warning markers—danger!—in our history books, written down so that we don’t repeat their mistakes. Our positions in the story are parallel—they at the beginning, we at the end—and we are just as capable of messing it up as they were. Don’t be so naive and self-confident. You’re not exempt. You could fall flat on your face as easily as anyone else. Forget about self-confidence; it’s useless. Cultivate God-confidence.

Definition of Red Flag from The American Heritage Dictionary:
 Danger
1.  A warning signal.
2.  Something that demands attention or provokes an irritated reaction.

I have been to the beach numerous times since early childhood. Among the many times I have been to the gulf I have enjoyed seafood, sand, and sun.  The beach is my “safe place” where I like to disappear to get away from the day to day concerns.  I love to take walks morning, noon, and night.  I love the water and the waves and children laughing and the sounds of seagulls.
 Children Playing
I do not love sunburn; I do not love sand that I cannot seem to remove from my body; and I do not love RED FLAGS. This week while vacationing at Laguna Beach and Gulf Shores, I witnessed a host of red flags.  A red flag displayed on the beach indicates treacherous water conditions.  The individual in authority who positions the bold red flags along the beach is not kidding when warning beach enthusiasts of apparent danger. The symbol of the red flag doesn’t simply mean “be careful” — it goes a step further to clarify that one is taking a true risk when choosing to get into the water.

I was amazed at the many people who not only ignored these obvious alarms, but also allowed their small children to participate in their poor choice. Saturday, when I arrived at my first beach stop at Laguna Beach, helicopters were flying overhead. I soon realized that someone had drowned, and the coast guard was searching for the man lost in the waters.

The riptides rip lives away…..we must respect the water, and we must acknowledge warning signals.  Isn’t it true that our Lord also displays red flags to provide warnings of dangerous situations?  He may provide red flags in possible destructive relationships, in financial matters, in health issues, in worldly matters, etc. The red flags are not placed in our midst to spoil our fun, but rather to protect us from destructive circumstances. Any choice we make whether good or bad has consequences.

How many times have we found ourselves under water? Once we are under water, it doesn’t matter how deep the water is…..the object is to keep our head above water. We all get caught in the storms of life, but our ”safe place” is with Him, and it’s even more comforting when we recognize His Presence and respect the boundaries He has set for us.

We may not be the ones rejecting the red flags.  We may actually witness loved ones oblivious to these blaring reminders of danger ahead.  There is no way to describe the discomfort we may feel while walking the beach-side of life only to see a family member or dear friend dive into treacherous waters. We can wave our red flags frantically in the attempt to get their attention until we are exhausted!

We cannot possibly fight the riptides of life without the Life Preserver.  When we realize we cannot stay afloat, we become so depleted from fighting the waves on our own, that we may finally give up and drown.  Sure, while surfing on the exciting waves of the world, it appears to be so much fun!  But the consequence of riding the waves while red flags are flapping, can be brutal and life threatening to the body, soul, and spirit.

I would like to stick to my “safe place” under the umbrella of the Savior who’s shielding me from getting burned in the overwhelming waves surrounding me.  He’s the Life Guard with a perspective from above Who is able to predict my future (He’s already seen the whole picture).  The best news is that no matter how far I sink into the abyss when I make poor decisions, He will pull me out.  He’s just shaking His head at my stubbornness.  He wants to lead me on the safe route; it’s much easier to be proactive than reactive!

With Christ as my Anchor, my castle one day in Heaven won’t wash away!  What peace there is in knowing that the destruction of ignoring red flags is never final, because I accepted the gift of His blood red sacrifice on a hill called Calvary.

Christ is the SONSHINE that won’t burn!
 Sunshine
Splish Splash with disaster, and we will drown into the depths!
Recognize Red Flags by hanging out with our Life Guard!

John 3:16-17
Jesus Fish
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.  For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world; but that the world should be saved through Him.”

Kelli Ryan, a sister in Christ who has an email ministry similar to mine, sent me a profound message that I couldn’t help but share this week.  Some of you may have read the following poem before; it truly defines Christianity, and our worth to our Lord.  First of all, we are only worthy, because of Jesus. I think about when I was in grammar school and we would pick teams for kickball or softball during P.E. I always felt sorry for the kid who was picked last…(sometimes that kid was me..ha).  The message below affirms how HE CHOSE ME and HE CHOSE YOU…..and we are His FIRST pick.  We didn’t deserve to be picked, but the Son proved how important we are to Him!  YOU are special!  YOU are the apple of His eye.  He loved YOU first.  If that doesn’t get you pumped, well, just read on………

The U in JesUs  (…Author unknown)

Before U were thought of or time had begun,
God even stuck U in the name of His Son.

And each time U pray, you’ll see it’s true
You can’t spell out JesUs and not include U.

You’re a pretty big part of His wonderful name,
For U, He was born; that’s why He came.

And His great love for U is the reason He died.
It even takes U to spell crUcified.

Isn’t it thrilling and splendidly grand
He rose from the dead, with U in His plan?

The stones split away, the gold trUmpet blew,
and this word resUrrection is spelled with a U.

When JesUs left earth at His Upward ascension,
He felt there was one thing He just had to mention.

“Go into the world and tell them it’s trUe
That I love them all – Just like I love U.”

So many great people are spelled with a U,
Don’t they have a right to know JesUs too?

It all depends now on what U will do,
He’d like them to know, But it all starts with U

So, if you wondering if the Lord has forgotten about YOU…think again.
He’s crazy about YOU! He allows U-TURNS over and over again!
Oh another thing, He would love it if you told others about His plan!

Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding; think about Him in all your ways, and He will guide you on the right paths.
  Silver Cross
Have you ever wanted anything or anyone so bad that you thought you would break if you didn’t receive it?  I read in the “One Year Bible” in 1 Samuel the other day, and I discovered a similar scenario.

Samuel was judge over Israel, but when he grew old he appointed his sons as judges for Israel.  His sons did not walk in his ways, so the elders of Israel gathered together and wanted to appoint a king to lead them. Samuel was crushed at their demand for a king.  He cried out to God, and God answered by telling Samuel, “..it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king.” The people of Israel were desperate for a king.  In a nutshell God warned via Samuel, “Be careful what you wish for; you just might get it.”  They got their king, but they also got double trouble.
 King
Sometimes, when we are so intent on getting what we want when we want it…..God let’s us have it…..consequently, an undesirable outcome due to our stubborn hard-headed attitude is the final result.  Just like little children cannot possibly comprehend what they want or what they need, we as children of the One True King can’t fathom the big picture.

“Man proposes and God disposes.”  Absolutely…..our world unfolds according to God’s sovereign plans, not ours.  It’s wise to be positive about our future, but it’s another thing to embrace full control of everything that comes our way.  When we ponder our plans, we must do so with humility, gratitude, and faith in what the Lord has designed for us.

We must remember that we are the servants, and He’s our Master.  Our petitions should line up with His agenda.  “Let’s never forget that some of God’s greatest mercies are His refusals.” (Elisabeth Elliot)  If we are obedient to His plan, His desires will become our desires.  He will remove anything that doesn’t fit.  Furthermore, He will exceed our expectations in a measure that we could never have imagined or hoped for. (Ephesians 3:20)

Staying on track with His will requires consistent heartfelt prayer and feeding on Scripture.  When we build on God’s standard and honor Him in all that we do, He will give us the desires of our heart, and we will be confident that it is from Him….not our own selfish flesh.
 Bible 1
God wants to do something supernatural in our lives.  He promises to meet our needs, teach us His ways, reveal Himself and mold our character, and most importantly, transform our thinking.  He loves us so much that when He says “no” He is really presenting His beautiful version of “YES.”
 Yes!
If you are desperate for something to come to pass……take time to enter into His presence.  Talk to Him…share your heart…BUT…listen and obey, because “Father knows BEST!”

2 Chronicles 16:9

Jeremiah 29:13
“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with ALL your heart.”

Last weekend, The Church of Brook Hills shared a six-hour message on “Who Is God?” at a powerful evening Bible Study that they coined “Secret Church.” Unfortunately, I was unable to attend, but one of my dear brothers in Christ, Geoff Gottlieb, who is an active member at this worship home, shared a remarkable entry in his blog yesterday regarding the experience.

Interestingly, Pastor Chris Hodges of Church of the Highlands shared some similar insights in his message for our mid-week service this past Wednesday.  Our entire church, along with hundreds of church homes across the United States, will be participating in a study called “One Prayer” to take place for eight weeks beginning in June.  Pastor Chris shared a taste of what is to come regarding this amazing topic, and his message will be included on DVD for one week of this study.  Pastor Chris desires that our “one prayer” is to “make us authentic.”

Pastor Chris says that in order to make us AUTHENTIC CHRISTIANS…

1.  We must approach God wholeheartedly.

We have to sell out to God and give Him 100% or it won’t work!

2.  We must exchange religion for relationship.

3.  We must put our faith on Him, not just in Him.

Now, check out some of what my friend Geoff wrote in his blog:
(I edited portions due to length of the message)

‘We have but to want Him badly enough, and He will come and manifest Himself to us.’ – AW Tozer.

If we want God badly enough, He will come manifest Himself in us. This is the job of the Holy Spirit.

Only the Spirit of God knows the fullness of the Glory of God.

When we begin following Christ, we receive the gift of the Holy Spirit….that is the Spirit of God living within us. The Spirit is the only One Who knows the fullness of Christ. The great thing is that we receive this Spirit and have it working within our lives to direct us and change us.

So if we want to know God, we need the Spirit to reveal Himself to us.

Therefore, a people who are desperate to know God will be desperate for His Spirit…..Are you desperate for the Spirit of God? Or have traffic jams and 40-hour work weeks and TV and whatever else is going on distracted you from being desperate?

If we are not desperate for His Spirit, it is a sure indicator that we have grown content with knowing little about God. And, it’s all too easy today. People will have you think that saying a couple of Godly things and going to a church gets the job done.

Do we REALLY want to know the glory of God?

If so, then we must be a people who are desperate for the Spirit of Christ. Desperate for the Spirit of Christ. Wanting nothing more in this life than a better understanding of God and following Christ’s life and wanting the Spirit to dwell in us and give us the mind of Christ. To be a vessel that God will use to shake the world, to shake the nations, to shake our neighborhood, our friends, and our families.

When we are desperate for the Spirit of Christ, our hearts will begin to understand God with the very perspective of Christ.

Are you hungry? Is your relationship with God in a holding pattern, or are you becoming more and more acquainted through the Spirit? Ponder this…..

When we know God:
 Place Of Worship
Routine religion is no longer tolerable.
Casual worship is no longer possible.
 Woohoo
Total surrender is no longer optional.
Global mission is no longer negotiable.
 Earth
Thank you Geoff for that remarkable insight! I especially was moved by the last words of “when we know God.” Doesn’t that just get you all fired up! Pastor Chris clarified that authentic Christianity must be “internal” instead of “external.”  It’s not about knowing every facet of theology!  It’s about KNOWING the PERSON!

Let’s GET REAL!  Let’s LIVE LIFE on PURPOSE!

Psalm 22:5b
…..in you they trusted and were not disappointed.
 Gold Cross
Galatians 1:10
Am I now trying to win the approval of men, or of God? Or am I trying to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ.

Whenever a situation or a person’s actions or reactions disappoint me……..
 Indifference
I have to remind myself……..”Why would I ever expect an imperfect person in an imperfect world and an imperfect circumstance to be “PERFECT?”  Precisely…..no matter how amazing a circumstance appears, no matter how “perfect” someone appears, no one is perfect (Christ is the ONLY exception)

I will never forget something Pastor Chris Hodges shared a few years ago with regard to relationships and our perception and/or expectations of people.  “We judge ourselves based on our intentions—but we judge others based on their actions.” No two people are alike. Therefore, why do we judge how someone should respond or react to any given situation?  Just because I handle a circumstance or situation a certain way, doesn’t mean others will operate in the same way.

No matter how hard we try to please someone, no matter how hard we try to control a person’s responses, and no matter how hard we attempt to exceed someone’s expectations (with or without fervent prayer taking place) we cannot control the outcome. In addition, because we are human, we cannot “know it all” about anyone we encounter.  Only God knows each one of us inside/out.
 Clown Jumping
Numerous attempts of people pleasing (a form of manipulating my life and others  by gripping the wheel with furious intensity) have left me discouraged and depleted. Since He knows my destiny in relationships and everything for that matter, why would I use my energy to strive on my own measly power?  His sacrifice took place so that I would no longer have to be in control of my complicated universe.  Instead of restraining me, an attitude of submission and sacrifice to Him frees me to live in complete joy and confidence, no matter what anyone else does.

When we as imperfect beings begin to realize our dependence on the only PERFECT BEING available, THAT IS WHEN WE FINALLY GET IT!  Nothing else matters!  Then…we arrive at a place of true significance. We finally grasp that His PRESENCE is what gives us strength in all of our relationships.  In addition, people will see His light and love in and through us when we are walking in the SPIRIT.

God will never let us down.  If we stay focused on Him, we will not be overcome with disappointment …because….we are gazing on the PERFECT ONE who has the PERFECT PLAN and WILL for our lives. That is the best source of POWER we could ever fathom!

So, next time something occurs that you are not expecting……relax, God is in control…..nothing takes Him by surprise. We are commanded to love people…but ONLY GOD can change hearts and fix people.  Therefore, when we place our faith in the Lord instead of mere imperfect humans….even disappointments will turn into blessings….because….. He makes everything new!

We do not have to strive for happiness, or value, or purpose in life and relationships when we seek the SOURCE of TRUE SIGNIFICANCE! And, indeed, He is the BEST FRIEND that mankind has ever had and will ever have! Instead of jumping through hoops to get the approval of a person, guess WHO is jumping through hoops to get our attention?  How GREAT is our God!!!
